But after I soldered on a perf board, laziness kicked in and I think I would just leave the project as it is.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I4QREOLGsTg/WqaRXeQVT5I/AAAAAAAAOmw/mPe-4HHrJsEDnp6LQxR-adMLzCQt7gkzQCHMYCw/s1600-h/IMG_20180306_081737%255B4%255D"><img title="Ni-MH Battery Charger Prototype" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="Ni-MH Battery Charger Prototype" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vRtwnKHwMxE/WqaRYh50ryI/AAAAAAAAOm0/zKJeCJslI-E9ReuYBvb7rI_MaLQ7-OP9gCHMYCw/IMG_20180306_081737_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="555" height="417" /></a></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C6NjTriTHvY/WqaRZhgs72I/AAAAAAAAOm4/xo67afiCLVgs2IbEaX_gnSsZUf_gyfYowCHMYCw/s1600-h/IMG_20180306_081757%255B3%255D"><img title="Ni-MH Battery Charger Prototype Topview" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="Ni-MH Battery Charger Prototype Topview" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mRLsWTMRJIU/WqaRaa6DgFI/AAAAAAAAOm8/jKTxToi4ZWof0a8tFR7H63T6niN4GwclQCHMYCw/IMG_20180306_081757_thumb?imgmax=800" width="555" height="417" /></a></p> <p> I goofed up big time during my component purchase. I wanted to order BQ2002PN, but because RS Online only sells them in a pack of 5, and I only wanted 3, I opted for another part, with “similar name. I thought it was the same! I bought 3 BQ2002TPN! I didn’t notice that until my controller just wouldn’t switch my current source on. I thought my soldering really sucks so much to the point that such a simple controller circuit wouldn’t work. </p> <p>I noticed that the current source worked when the controller is not there, so I started poking around the pins and matched the readings with the datasheet. I found some discrepancies. My LED lighted up even though the current source was switched off. I’ve forgotten how did I find out I bought the wrong part, but that’s definitely a facepalm moment.</p> <p><img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;" src="http://i0.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/000/554/picard-facepalm.jpg" width="551" height="310" /></p> <p>Anyway, I realised afterwards that BQ2002TPN only comes with temperature increate rate termination, dT/dt. Another facepalm moment, as my resistors were all designed for a dV/dt termination….. Another round of rework and adding in the thermistor, the design finally worked!!! And it worked so well that I could not believe it. It really terminated the charging after it detected a dT/dt of the battery. I have a plan to record and show the voltage waveform, but that can only be done during the weekend…</p> <p>And for the schematic:</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-777vl7eQE2o/WqaRbTdAJLI/AAAAAAAAOnA/vnELbJNxbwESf7vcCkZbzXnPCRh9UEwhwCHMYCw/s1600-h/image%255B3%255D"><img title="USB Ni-MH Battery Charger schematic" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="USB Ni-MH Battery Charger schematic" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Dk16r6mbFVI/WqaRcjPfgYI/AAAAAAAAOnE/zuCOU2czIx0KG3_xRHn_xpBZy57DdY0KwCHMYCw/image_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="555" height="235" /></a></p> <p>Still need some clean up. I’ve even picked-up FreeCAD to create 3D Model and produced a layout for this board. Well, maybe this project is not going to be fabricated, but the experience will definitely come in handy next time. <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" alt="Smile" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3eRy-V8C07c/WqaRduxWCXI/AAAAAAAAOnI/RZ7peHPALVEU8Tea_S0w7YjZuAN8ExgPgCHMYCw/wlEmoticon-smile%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" /></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6muqmW8LuxI/WqaRfOxA1OI/AAAAAAAAOnM/Wwt6-YkqOzwRDjK5BXaOWDQHEuq-C3MRQCHMYCw/s1600-h/image%255B7%255D"><img title="image" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="image" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uSca2otr2ww/WqaRgIY-vvI/AAAAAAAAOnQ/HRVpNlbUuM0j5o34fsKbFfWLgz3X6DengCHMYCw/image_thumb%255B3%255D?imgmax=800" width="555" height="268" /></a></p> <p>The next post would be the end of this project series, it’ll be just a short post to describe how did I choose the resistor value to parallel with the thermistor. Hope you guys have fun reading this. Until next time!</p>Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-63388574733316482342018-03-11T23:07:00.001+08:002018-03-12T22:42:05.401+08:00USB Ni-MH Battery Charger Part 2-The Current Source<p>So I’ve looked around on the Web for a suitable design for my controllable high-side current source. I would like it to be as simple and cheap as possible. The first one is the usual Op Amp and FET combination current source circuit. But to power up an op amp using USB 5V I would need a rail-to-rail type, which is not that cheap. I stumbled upon this <a href="https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/245844/high-side-variable-current-source" target="_blank">design</a>. The answer also improved the initial design by adding a diode.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o-6ISzqam8E/WqVGSJ7mLgI/AAAAAAAAOmE/UrVJFD5YEewbdY6iuWXFqhIP_5_MwohfwCHMYCw/s1600-h/image%255B1%255D"><img title="Constant Current Source" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="Constant Current Source" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iQEY6ro-1Qo/WqVGTDszliI/AAAAAAAAOmI/yhu8qtYgeu8t-tspjbYpVpTiK6FVoMTfwCHMYCw/image_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="558" height="504" /></a></p> <p>The idea is that, the voltage drop across R10 will be one diode drop, ~0.7V, so the current will be determined by the resistance of R10. Q1 is the ‘switch’ to control the current source from BQ2002. Q2 will adjust Vce accordingly to pass the current determined by R10. This also means that Q2 will have a big voltage across CE junction. 5V minus ~1.6V from battery, and 0.7V across R10, there’s still 2.7V across Q2, and we are passing around 0.7A. So that’s ~2W of power loss on Q2. This is not an efficient design, but it’s the simplest and easiest to be prototyped with my current stocks.</p> <p>I needed to try this before buying any Power PNP. I used a configuration known as Quasi Complementary Pair to try my circuit. With a jellybean PNP and a Power NPN, they act as a Power PNP transistor. The circuit was commonly used during the old times when Power PNP had lower quality due to process technology. Anyway, my circuit worked, and I proceeded to buying a couple of TIP32 (as they are the most common parts and the cheapest….) and some BQ2002.</p>Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-18743230831953094332018-03-05T00:10:00.001+08:002018-03-05T00:10:59.759+08:00USB Ni-MH Battery Charger Part 1-The End and The Beginning<p>These series of updates will focus on building a Ni-MH battery charger powered from USB. The main motivation is this: my battery charger from Panasonic got destroyed.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bytpqQK2kfI/WpwabWtr89I/AAAAAAAAOk4/PWrpTRC8Nf4bmIzQu5x7X2W_KqMH_nZSACHMYCw/s1600-h/IMG_20180124_214601%255B7%255D"><img title="Panasonic BQ-CC16" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="Panasonic BQ-CC16" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-45vm7E1Arn4/WpwacWSdXII/AAAAAAAAOk8/_e7-8dRvegsYRrNHDz1E0AGrsz3lkxHLgCHMYCw/IMG_20180124_214601_thumb%255B4%255D?imgmax=800" width="326" height="434" /></a></p> <p>It is a Panasonic BQ-CC16. I bought it in 2014-15 time with 4 of the Eneloop cells. My wireless mouse is using one of the cell and they last so long with one charge, so I only recharge them when about 2 of them are discharged. Anyway, my mouse was out of battery that day, so I replaced it with another cell, but all of them apparently were already discharged. So I brought out the charger, pop it the cells and switched on the power. I saw sparks and fire coming out form the charger and soon, my other devices connected to the same extension were out of power. I had just burnt my fuse in the extension. Luckily, the extension still works after I replaced the fuse, and it is cheap. But the charger is not….</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_xKRrMfy1Y4/WpwadkZnwoI/AAAAAAAAOlA/w05GrFmiNzkI5ZQkhJ0XM5tbHBqe6fnUACHMYCw/s1600-h/IMG_20180124_221746%255B4%255D"><img title="Arcing mark inside the cahrger" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="Arcing mark inside the cahrger" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-po4RhuhM2jY/WpwaeUz1E3I/AAAAAAAAOlE/8F25Lw8_vSYovH9-VJKIco5szTV-ccQqQCHMYCw/IMG_20180124_221746_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="558" height="420" /></a></p> <p>See the scary burnt marks from the arcing inside the charger? I’ll think twice now for placing my handphone charger so near to me when I am sleeping… </p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G-D4H8zVJjc/WpwagBiEFtI/AAAAAAAAOlI/Vk1VyJ3Dt6AaoBpkLJnNYlbjAfKka-QJACHMYCw/s1600-h/IMG_20180124_221731%255B3%255D"><img title="IMG_20180124_221731" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="IMG_20180124_221731" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n0elGl-b8WU/WpwahN8ePZI/AAAAAAAAOlM/1qREkVJPl-YWtIBMczUL0AAtpuYlO3pdgCHMYCw/IMG_20180124_221731_thumb?imgmax=800" width="558" height="420" /></a></p> <p>It seems like the arcing happens at the trace near R02 and TP10. Very strange as they are not that close, and nobody has any complaints about this charger being that dangerous. So, maybe I misused the charger? I only charge like 3-4 times a year, so maybe some dusts have accumulated inside and caused the arcing? I would appreciate your comments if you guys have any idea how this happened…</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sYCptxqMsuA/WpwaiRUfpII/AAAAAAAAOlQ/eKkEh4MYuT077gqxpXeo_lvKKjobN84LgCHMYCw/s1600-h/IMG_20180124_222227%255B3%255D"><img title="PCB" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="PCB" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MmJodpWkmkU/Wpwaka2mspI/AAAAAAAAOlU/3Et5vphzLJk2Ept_uDgM4K7WyijokgIfwCHMYCw/IMG_20180124_222227_thumb?imgmax=800" width="558" height="420" /></a></p> <p>The top side of the PCB. Seems well build to me. No flimsy dangling wires around. So why did it arc??? And the arc even blew my fuse… </p> <p>Since I don’t know how the charger work, I can’t fix it. Maybe I’ll just connect some sort of DC supply to the secondary side.</p> <p>Anyway, I initially wanted to buy a new charger, maybe multipurpose one, for Ni-MH and also Li-ion. But I thought that this would be a good project to build my own charger from scratch. I’ve been trying to build one, but the lack of motivation pushed me further and further, until this day…</p> <p>I’ve looked up on several off the shelf ICs, the MAX712 and LTC4060. They seem easy to use and are quite promising. But their prices are to high for a possibly one off project like this. (Or would anyone wants to buy ? Hahaha) So I searched deeper and found BQ2002. It’s just a controller to switch a current source on and off based on the battery condition. So, I locked it down to this controller IC and started to research how to implement the current source. Stay tuned to Part 2, for my journey into the battery charger realm!</p>Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-43995513653697455822016-10-30T23:13:00.001+08:002016-10-30T23:13:24.562+08:00Arduino Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Improved<p>A reader left a comment on my UPS post, he asked me to share the ‘improved’ design. </p> <p>I would not really categorise it as an ‘improved’ design because I simply removed the P-MOSFET.</p> <p>I also added a switch when they would not want the Arduino to be powered on.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-owoF5gJ6Tt0/WBYOClOjsYI/AAAAAAAAK5g/cYdx0IOhrjk/s1600-h/Schematic%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="Schematic" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Schematic" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y_yZksBa0j8/WBYODZf1KmI/AAAAAAAAK5k/8govmrCncXQ/Schematic_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="554" height="233" /></a></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z6PxGDlcusU/WBYOEUEHq2I/AAAAAAAAK5o/ctl1Le3YLOU/s1600-h/DSC_2878%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="Arduino UPS" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Arduino UPS" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wulQ5wZ6Ih4/WBYOEzqcdCI/AAAAAAAAK5s/vCoiRTyJBlc/DSC_2878_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="554" height="313" /></a></p> <p>The UPS was meant to power up an Arduino Nano, from USB or a Li-Ion Battery. </p> <p>I hope this blogpost will be helpful for anyone doing a small UPS for Arduino. I posted my Magnetic Levitation project on Hackster.io! It is really a great site to share your own project! <br />Here is the link to my project: <a title="https://www.hackster.io/chanhj/magnetic-levitation-8c3ad0?ref=custom&ref_id=45065&offset=4" href="https://www.hackster.io/chanhj/magnetic-levitation-8c3ad0?ref=custom&ref_id=45065&offset=4">https://www.hackster.io/chanhj/magnetic-levitation-8c3ad0?ref=custom&ref_id=45065&offset=4</a> <br /><iframe height="327" src="https://www.hackster.io/chanhj/magnetic-levitation-8c3ad0/embed?use_route=project" frameborder="0" width="350" scrolling="no"></iframe></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ek7FI_qCFDM/Vz10fHCm3fI/AAAAAAAAJ-M/Dxym9IgMdH4/s1600-h/DSC_3221%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="Magnetic Levitation" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 15px 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Magnetic Levitation" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M-6aILQs3Xc/Vz10gCtrYhI/AAAAAAAAJ-Q/s8Z_cgKGufg/DSC_3221_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="554" height="313" /></a> <br /> <br />Even though I’ve posted some brief intro and instructions there, they are not very detailed. But then I am a lazy guy, so if you need more details, just leave a comment, maybe I can improve the post? <br />It's made with a U3503 Linear Hall Effect Sensor, a MOSFET and a LED. :D It is that simple.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WlLqILGmn84/Vz10jHGL2JI/AAAAAAAAJ-U/k49CA7kYil0/s1600-h/DSC_3229%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="Magnetic Levitation Circuitry" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 15px 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Magnetic Levitation Circuitry" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AKxkdnm9Nt0/Vz10j2kRGsI/AAAAAAAAJ-Y/tOY0PVcxAx8/DSC_3229_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="554" height="313" /></a></p> <p><img title="Magnetic Levitation Circuitry Interfaced with Arduino UNO" style="margin: 15px 0px 5px" alt="Magnetic Levitation Circuitry Interfaced with Arduino UNO" src="https://halckemy.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/image_file/file/145001/New%20Doc%203_1.jpg" width="550" height="392" /></p> <p> <br />My code is copied directly from another guy listed in my hackster project. All credits go to him, I only edited the PID parameters. However, his code does not compensate for the field generated by the coil itself, maybe I can research more on that, keep planning... Less doing, all the time... <br /> <br /><iframe height="365" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6pGzQsmcDWc" frameborder="0" width="550" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> <br />I have since then found another levitation project to make, it’s a rotating globe, with blinking LEDs! Who doesn’t love LEDs right? Until next time, keep making things! :D</p>Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-78087978915129782832016-03-29T16:51:00.001+08:002016-04-07T15:33:02.297+08:00Experiment 8-AC Single Phase Induction MotorsI started to take photos of my Power Laboratory experiment for no reasons since my first lab work. Since many do not have the chance to actually operate an AC machine( even my electronics engineering course mates hahaha), ceiling fan and machine machine excluded, I think it’s a good idea I share the photos out.<br />
My theory might not be perfect, so please correct me if you spot any mistake of any kind, I thank you in advance. ( But I wouldn’t go into too much theory though…)<br />
My experiment is divided into Split-Phase motor, Capacitor-Start motor and Capacitor-Run motor. These are all induction motor, operating with a single phase supply. Thus we need to create another phase of supply to provide a rotating magnetic field to turn the rotor.<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KQ5szyZ4lJs/VvpBhSdReCI/AAAAAAAAJLQ/w72iSFttCv4/s1600-h/DSC_3053%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Capacitor-start motor" border="0" height="313" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Vmg5yf3Jljc/VvpBi1-qQ2I/AAAAAAAAJLU/dA8shm8rAAo/DSC_3053_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 15px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Capacitor-start motor" width="554" /></a><br />
We used the capacitor-start motor without the capacitor, functioning as a split-phase motor. The auxiliary or the start winding has a high resistance and inductive reactance, while the main winding or the run winding has low resistance and high inductive reactance. Because of the different ratio of winding resistance to the inductive reactance, the run winding current lags the start winding current, creating a phase difference between them. This creates fields that are out of phase, which in turn produces a rotating magnetic field in the stator. This develops torque in the rotor, starting the motor. ( And almost all of these are copied from my lab manual. Credits to whoever produced these sheets. )<br />
<br />
The starting current of split-phase induction motor is 4 to 5 times of their full-load current, thus the starting period has to be short to prevent over heating. ( And I felt the heat after applying power for just 3 seconds!) A centrifugal switch will switch out the start winding ( which has high resistance and will overheat and burn out easily ) once the rotor reaches certain rpm. <br />

Showing the auxiliary winding ( the thinner wire) and the main winding ( the thicker wire).<br />

Closer shot of the windings and also observe the clearance of the stator and the rotor.<br />
<br />
The operation of a capacitor-start motor is pretty similar to a split-phase motor. Now we connect the capacitor in series with the auxiliary winding. This provides a rotating magnetic field as well. The cap and winding are disconnected with a centrifugal switch as well.<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EK3nh3N5Gf8/VvpB4CUP52I/AAAAAAAAJL4/nkzRZlzxsG0/s1600-h/DSC_3059%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSC_3059" border="0" height="313" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bu64BAyeZZE/VvpB5CIAdkI/AAAAAAAAJL8/kUh-33fRIiE/DSC_3059_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 15px 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSC_3059" width="554" /></a><br />
This is the full setup, including ammeter, voltmeter, wattmeter and electrodynamometer. <br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ua3MhV5jELU/VvpB8jqyexI/AAAAAAAAJMA/jlrnNTE7KBo/s1600-h/DSC_3060%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSC_3060" border="0" height="313" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pYDaZrf717k/VvpB9slEV_I/AAAAAAAAJME/xHKGTAdvrok/DSC_3060_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 15px 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSC_3060" width="554" /></a><br />
Another type of capacitor, mounted for capacitor-run motor.<br />
<br />
The capacitor in capacitor-run motor is always connected to the auxiliary winding and power. It doesn’t get disconnected with centrifugal switch. The manual states that it’ll be more quiet at full load, but honestly I didn’t feel the difference. Still vibrating like no body’s business!<br />

I would slowly update this blog with my previous and next experiment. Other than Power Lab, I have Advanced Power Electronics Lab as well, dealing with thyristors! Stay tuned. :DHao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-32620723970858791012016-03-12T11:06:00.001+08:002016-03-19T17:15:34.230+08:00Feedly- My Daily Newsletter<img height="75" src="https://s3.feedly.com/img/feedly-full-black.png" style="margin: 15px 0px;" width="258" /><br />

<br />
I have been using this for over one whole year now. I think this is a very useful tool so I want to share this out.<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ms4iKgQs3dg/VuOHvlgCU7I/AAAAAAAAI-c/d3owS0S9jYc/s1600-h/feedly%252520GUI%25255B5%25255D.png"><img alt="feedly GUI" border="0" height="373" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-otMnF6nOdqw/VuOHxbdKJeI/AAAAAAAAI-g/faZErFdHz78/feedly%252520GUI_thumb%25255B3%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 15px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="feedly GUI" width="600" /></a><br />
Feedly main screen, captured from the website introduction page<br />
<br />
<a href="https://feedly.com/i/welcome">Feedly</a> is a subscription tool. It is like a newspaper service, but it operates online. You choose whichever journals, articles or even YouTube channel you like, Feedly will collect their updates and arrange them nicely in your Feedly homepage. <br />
<br />
Using Feedly is simple, just go over to the website, register and login, subscribe to your favourite sites so you would not miss any of the updates. So you can subscribe to my blog too if you want!<br />
<br />
The biggest challenge for me before using Feedly is that I have too many websites to keep track of. And you would not have all the time to keep refreshing the website to check the updates. And e-mails are quite annoying for me. I used Google Reader before it is gone, then I found Feedly. My subscription ranges from Electronics and Arduino stuffs, to homebrew comical videos and Japanese lesson.<br />
<br />
So, use it now to help in your reading. I call mine a One-Stop Reading Corner in this distracting world of Internet.<br />
<br />
P/S I am not in anyway affiliated with Feedly. But it would be nice to give me like a one month premium service maybe? Haha.Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-47829923017325312962016-02-07T22:58:00.001+08:002016-02-07T22:59:29.693+08:00Happy Chinese New YearIt’s almost New Year here in Malaysia. My Strike Freedom is still in building process. So I did some photo shooting with a “ang bao” (red packet).<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oThjuVxMCvc/VrdbSsLogqI/AAAAAAAADvE/cZfhZ90MgBY/s1600-h/Strike%252520Freedom%252520with%252520ang%252520bao%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Strike Freedom with ang bao" border="0" height="313" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qNnuyWph_5c/VrdbVMG8TeI/AAAAAAAADvI/eYw8Zmn6Xp0/Strike%252520Freedom%252520with%252520ang%252520bao_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 15px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Strike Freedom with ang bao" width="554" /></a><br />
Strike Freedom is still my favourite Gundam until today. Maybe it’s because it is the first model I ever watched? Nothing beats childhood memories I suppose.<br />

This is my sister’s calligraphy writing for Chinese New Year. She got the first prize for a contest in her school with this writing. Sure, it needs some polishing, but at least it’s better than mine. <br />
<br />
So, happy Chinese New Year everyone! Wish you guys have a wonderful and prosperous year ahead!Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-3808849748224459242016-02-02T18:03:00.001+08:002016-02-12T11:07:15.001+08:00MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame from Daban ModelHi guys. This is a Gunpla I finished like months ago. I did not have the time to properly take photos for this awesome figure! ( Its build is actually more playable than Akatsuki… My Akatsuki has a very weak leg peg that keeps falling off…) <br />
Anyway, this is my first time taking photos for gunpla ( okay, not the first time, but this is the first trial of me trying really hard to pose the figure!), used one whole day with some intermittent breaks haha.<br />

This is how I am posing Red Frame on my shelf now. By the way, I bought a new shelf, that’s why I pulled this model out of its box. It’s a shame not to showcase this guy. It’s stunning!<br />
That’s all from me. Feel free to comment on my lousy skills, be it building or photoshooting. I made a lot of mistakes everywhere. <br />
This project has been in my mind for a long time. I have always wanted an easy to use power supply, without resorting to Arduino for a 5V supply. With the addition of a cheap DIY oscilloscope which requires a 9V supply, this project became more and more important.<br />
With the start of my sem break, this long overdue project finally got the chance to be completed.<br />
<br />

Another shot at the completed project exterior.<br />

Okay, time for some explaination. This “power supply” is basically just a buck converter, I am using a cheap one from China, using MP1584EN as the switching IC.<br />
My plan was to change the SMD potentiometer, to a bigger one which can be turned by hand. (I was frustrated by the need of a screwdriver just to change the voltage level.<br />
<br />
The input is taken from a laptop adapter, which I have one laying around. So, it is a 19-21V to maybe 0.8V-18V supply with a maximum of 3A load ( that’s what the datasheet and seller claims, I would not use it for more than 2A personally. )<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ELEqVYM8XHE/Vpumt4phpgI/AAAAAAAADaE/Ji5hI3olxL8/s1600-h/DSC_2938%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Power Supply Interior3" border="0" height="341" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YZmAIPZtHGw/VpumvZsE8mI/AAAAAAAADaM/NKW3F02VCyk/DSC_2938_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Power Supply Interior3" width="604" /></a><br />
The potentiometer solder pads were quite small and were ruined when I desoldered the pot. Heck I even spoil the pot! Then I put a 10K potentiometer initailly, found out that my input would not rise over 2V. I figured my resistance was too low for the feedback path. I then change the pot to a 100K pot. Better, but the voltage stopped at 10V. Can be used, but I wasn’t satisfied. I found that the resistor value is different for 2 batches of boards. Refer to the following photos.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Blop2_rpgfQ/Vpum9OX1DEI/AAAAAAAADaU/-_q3gZ3mlvo/s1600-h/DSC_2939%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="MP1584EN board" border="0" height="341" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zjt9YLbN0ug/Vpum-bwnvpI/AAAAAAAADac/-1gif9FWbfQ/DSC_2939_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="MP1584EN board" width="604" /></a><br />
This is from the old batch, green colour board. Now If we zoom in to the resistor,<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RjLwmkG0i1A/VpunFswb8dI/AAAAAAAADak/d8Yj0aIO8eM/s1600-h/DSC_2941%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="MP1584EN board closeup" border="0" height="341" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NUef_kw6pcE/VpunG-zva3I/AAAAAAAADas/iNZZwqEVbO0/DSC_2941_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="MP1584EN board" width="604" /></a><br />
It’s 322, as in 3.2K ohm.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iO2dhesLRSk/VpunOWFJ__I/AAAAAAAADa0/b5vk50RO2xA/s1600-h/DSC_2943%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="MP1584EN board new" border="0" height="341" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nV9Wly123Qk/VpunPul6mYI/AAAAAAAADa8/5TZu3mQoYP8/DSC_2943_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="MP1584EN board" width="604" /></a><br />
The new one, (as in the one I used), blue board, has a 822 SMD resistor, 8.2K ohm. The potentiometer forms a potential divider with the resistor to produce a feedback to the IC. The IC requires 0.8V at the feedback. 100K is simply too small for me to generate up to 18V.<br />
<br />
Thus, I hacked the board, again. I have some 10K SMD resistors around. I simply soldered them on top of each other, to reduce the resistance. SO in the end, it’s 8.2K//10K//10K = <5K ohm!<br />
And that worked! Circuit theory rocks! <img alt="Open-mouthed smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DZDBYzvBqLg/VpunQcc5mxI/AAAAAAAADbE/ChBM7i1RA28/wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /> Sorry I just have to bask in my glory for a little while. <br />
Now, I can move on the next project, which is still undecided.<br />
<br />
See you next time!Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-42230869138341993582015-12-12T22:45:00.000+08:002016-10-30T23:16:33.172+08:00Arduino Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)Recently a friend of mine asked me to design a simple Uninterruptible Power Supply for Arduino using some handphone battery ( Li-ion) and handphone charger.<br />
<br />
I decided to use a TP4056 charger board to charge the battery, while using a P-MOSFET to control when will the battery provide power to a 5V Step Up Converter.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzj4AY3m8dVHDz6tjwhmsd7t4yZLzaW29hOLamR7itVepVCsLoCJjJ1LSQLFShVolDOijtDrDveRklYGaT9_uGfH4R-b_bpak4yre8r8jBUpTXstYUwBKCl9zPR_gNN_BppvHziFUrxhk/s1600/Arduino+UPS.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzj4AY3m8dVHDz6tjwhmsd7t4yZLzaW29hOLamR7itVepVCsLoCJjJ1LSQLFShVolDOijtDrDveRklYGaT9_uGfH4R-b_bpak4yre8r8jBUpTXstYUwBKCl9zPR_gNN_BppvHziFUrxhk/s640/Arduino+UPS.png" width="600" /></a><br />
<br />
The schematic shows the 5V from a handphone USB charger feeding a 5V Boost Converter, which powers an Arduino Uno. The 5V will also charge the Li-Ion via TP4056 board. If the USB Supply is gone, the P-MOSFET will be switched on and the Li-Ion battery can power the Boost Converter.<br />
<br />
( on second thought, now I am thinking about the usefulness of the P-MOS. I was thinking of switching the battery on and off but now I think it serves no purpose... LOL)<br />
<br />
Anyway, the 2 diodes are 1N5158 , I forgot to change it on the schematic. I think the P-MOS can be eliminated because the 5V from the USB would have prevented the battery from supplying power anyway.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPrm3d6_Xien7pFU0qae4Gw3DdcuCprwZWlk9RsPtKPAaSEhGpURW6XqBiGnLUwjxkulV6WAzg7nX7OR9XIjdhA-CqTlTR9wu7RR5HjJH-X7dHxi4IbchU5CJYNfDwLZ9LF31PeEnZCfw/s1600/2015-12-05+13.21.20.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPrm3d6_Xien7pFU0qae4Gw3DdcuCprwZWlk9RsPtKPAaSEhGpURW6XqBiGnLUwjxkulV6WAzg7nX7OR9XIjdhA-CqTlTR9wu7RR5HjJH-X7dHxi4IbchU5CJYNfDwLZ9LF31PeEnZCfw/s640/2015-12-05+13.21.20.jpg" width="600" /></a><br />
<br />
This is my end result on a perf board. My friend says that it is working fine, at least until now. (I have no confidence in my design).<br />
<br />
Cheers!<br />

Here I am, holding one. My mom bought this like years ago and it broke just weeks after it was purchased. I knew something was wrong but never had the time to dig deeper. <br />
Today, I was searching for an answer for this. I thought it was just a simple corrupted sector or memory. Googled whole day, tried all sorts of formatting tools, from Windows built-in formatting tool to the HP format tool, but all were unable to complete the formatting. The Windows Formatting says that the disk drive is "Write-Protected", and changing the registry key of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies to 0 did not work at all.The <a href="http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/" target="_blank">Low Level Format Tool</a> returned Device I/O Error for Format Error Occurred at Offset 0 and so on for all 8Gb of memory location.<br />
<br />
Then, I stumbled across the <a href="http://flashdrive-repair.tumblr.com/post/70594203779/download-the-best-flash-drive-tool-chip-genius" target="_blank">Chip Genius</a> tool. It shows the chip and vendor information.<br />

<br />
This is after I have fixed the drive. Before this it showed something like "山寨黑盘" which means it might be a fake drive from China. Anyway, nothing can be worse, perhaps I can at least salvage what is left of it.<br />
<br />
Google showed me AlcorMP, a software they used to program the controller of the USB disk before selling the disks. This is how they "fake" the memory size of the disk. ( do correct me if I am wrong, I'm not so sure about this myself)<br />
<br />
Tried the first one, failed. Second one, failed as well. Turned out I need to find the one which will work with my Firmware. The info is listed as "F/W EF66" as shown in the picture.<br />
<br />
Google pointed me to <a href="http://flashboot.ru/files/file/53/" target="_blank">http://flashboot.ru/files/file/53/</a> , where the translation for the comments showed promising result for my firmware. But before that, I need to make sure AlcorMP recognise my disk.<br />

<br />
Following the steps from <a href="http://reboot.pro/topic/18469-formating-usb-with-manufacturer-tool/?p=171524" target="_blank">Formating USB with Manufacturer Tool - USB Drive Format Utilities - reboot.pro</a> , I added my VID and PID for IgnoreVIDPID and VIDPID , which in my particular disk is 00117788 into AlcorMP.ini file.<br />
<br />
Run AlcorMP.exe as ADMIN ( this is very important as I could not load the driver without admin access) and this will pop up.<br />
<br />

<br />
Click Start and it will start to scan for bad sectors and restore the disk to its default value.<br />
<br />
Mine actually became 1.4GB only after the process.( verified using H2testw)<br />

I am taking a English Language course in USM, LSP404. The course requires an Individual Oral Presentation as an assessment. So, I took the opportunity to introduce papercraft, a wonderful hobby rarely known to Malaysians to my friends and lecturer.<br />
<br />
I made a Pikachu from <a href="http://www.pokemonpapercraft.net/2010/12/pikachu-v2.html" target="_blank">Paperpokes</a> ( partly because I wanted to build something. It has been like one year since I used my cutting mat and pen knife) and documented some of the building processes in the slides. The slides should give a good introduction to those who want to start on this hobby but are clueless about the process.<br />
<br />
Feel free to leave a comment or email me in case you have any questions.<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy the slides and keep papercrafting!<br />

My bad, been procrastinating again and again. Today, it’s the final day of my mid-semester break, and I finally have the ‘mood’ to type again. Same thing repeated, a lot had been done, but no time to blog, haha. While my Sword Impulse is put away, ( the ink quality is… terrible. The red is so washed out now I am hesitating to reprint the templates, but when I look back at the head, it’s quite good… Any idea? <img alt="Sad smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-sadsmile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Kvx5MQ4FsUc/U0l_Hrt6EhI/AAAAAAAAC-M/egW7Nesg6es/wlEmoticon-sadsmile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /> ) I built another gundam. You know, the gundam papercraft designs are now mostly 40cm in height, probably? The designer thought of another idea: why don’t we reduce the height to about HG grade GUNPLA, which has a ratio of 1:144.<br />
Hence, the product is a 1:144 papaercraft Gundam Exia! If you look around in the blog, you’ll find Destiny Gundam and Gundam Unicorn in the same size as well!<br />

I could only say the design is marvelous! It is small yet detailed. Of course, it cannot compete the level of detail with the 40cm model, but once I completed it, I really like it. The difficulty is a bit tougher, because of the small size part, but I would actually recommend beginners to try this first if they were to venture into the world of paper gundam. At least in my opinion, it is easier than <a href="http://chanskingdom.blogspot.com/2013/09/sd-wing-zero-custom-wings-rifles-and.html" target="_blank">SD Wing Zero Custom</a>. It took me only 3 days to build it, and I wasn’t very focus on it as well. <br />
<br />
Alright, time for some photos!<br />

Sorry for not posting since January I think? A lot has happened but I just could not squeeze the time (and mood) to blog. Thinking about editing and posting makes me wanna procrastinate everything! If anyone has any ideas on how to overcome this situation, please kindly let me know.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I made this on White Day. as requested by my friend. This is just a guideline for him to follow, I hope his girlfriend will appreciate it! It was not too hard, but not easy too!<br />
<br />
Happy White Day once again!<br />

Can't stop looking at the 'handsome' face of Sword Impulse LOL.<br />
<br />
Anyway, this is to illustrate the amount of papers required by this model.<br />

You can see the details here. The side vent, the antenna, all are designed perfectly!<br />
I screwed up on the front part of the helmet, causing it to have a dent. Too much force on paper and this is what you'll get.<br />

Hello guys. Sorry for the 'invisible' updates . Trust me, they are already in my mind, just that I'm too lazy to visualise them. I have so many things to share, all about the stuffs I did in USM.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I'm now enjoying my sembreak, so I decided to start a new gundam papercraft. It will be 47cm tall<br />
I believe and it's the Sword Impulse Gundam from Seed Destiny series! <br />
<br />
I'll try to update once per day, hoping to complete it before my holiday ends. <br />
<br />
So, this is my progress so far :<br />

<br />
Two days and that's my progress, phew. Still a long way to go. And that's just the head, the smallest part of the gundam. But this gives me a whole lot more reason to post haha. <br />
<br />
See you guys tomorrow! <br />

Twiss Programme</h3>
Last week was one busy week. My weekend was packed with activities and programmes!.<br />
One of them was TWISS Programme. I don't have a clue what is the full name for TWISS ( I think TWISS is a short form, right? ), but it was meant to introduce to us, USM School of Electrical and Electronic First Year Student , the concept of Student Centred Study.<br />
<br />
<br />
It was organised in Friday and Saturday, using almost two days, and we were required to build an electrical car!<br />
<br />
I was totally stumped by this project as we don't even know how to use a breadboard to test our circuit, not to say building a complete circuit! Well, they provided us with some short training session... Personally, I feel that the training session is too short, I had to take out all the components even before I completed my circuit. But then, this is the first time they organised such programme... So, keep up the good work!<br />
<br />
Anyway, this is my complete circuit board done by my team. We did it quite fast, way ahead of other groups and most importantly, it works! <br />
<img alt="Motor Car Circuit Board" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qaJT3cbq7Us/UmSVp7ewYpI/AAAAAAAAC0g/JdbzEhVT_Qk/DSC_0021_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Motor Car Circuit Board" width="554" /><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-sU9L8c9H0j4/UmSVqvbPMHI/AAAAAAAAC0s/DOWbXeIeF4I/s1600-h/DSC_0023%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Motor Car Circuit Board Working" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HBlnjk2fd1I/UmSVrQnZk2I/AAAAAAAAC0w/Vir2l1nN_Hg/DSC_0023_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Motor Car Circuit Board Working" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
But then, nothing is certain in this world.<br />
<a name='more'></a> Our car won't move! We thought of using rubber band to move the wheel, but we forgot about the stretching power of the rubber band. The motor and the wheel axis were not properly fixed in place! <br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nw_INI7RmrM/UmSVr9JpvQI/AAAAAAAAC08/t9zVkRWb-RA/s1600-h/DSC_0024%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Motor car circuit board with 'casing'" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-dh79REuu6Ds/UmSVsnUJ7lI/AAAAAAAAC1E/TA2grbRv9Jo/DSC_0024_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Motor car circuit board with 'casing'" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
But all cars which succeeded using rubber band moved much faster and accelerates faster. That creates a motivation to remodify my model car, IF I have the free time hahaha.<br />
<br />
<h3>
IEEE DIY PCB Workshop</h3>
On Sunday, DIY PCB Workshop was organised by IEEE society.<br />
<br />
What is a PCB? PCB is Printed Circuit Board, and we were going to make PCB by ourselves!<br />
<br />
If you would like to know more about the process, watch the video below. <br />
It was made by my seniors.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:6b7451f5-980b-4ee4-8832-60631d114731" style="display: inline; float: none; margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">

<br />
<br />
This is my printed circuit on copper plate, transferred from PCB paper. Too bad I forgot to take a photo of PCB paper. Well, I will have another chance in November. <img alt="Smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ZeIGeL1Nq-0/UmSVtT5BRoI/AAAAAAAAC1I/teCbQuve6G4/wlEmoticon-smile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-EdK2pTSQEh0/UmSVt5vWSJI/AAAAAAAAC1U/f6fvz--gg28/s1600-h/DSC_0019%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="A Printed Circuit Board" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-p21IxUPT81w/UmSVuhe59CI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/NdX6KBRszr8/DSC_0019_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="A Printed Circuit Board" width="554" /></a><br />
Notice the smiley!!!<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-GF_uI1sirQo/UmSVvD2g57I/AAAAAAAAC1k/AZxmwaCymws/s1600-h/DSC_0017%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Closeup on the Printed Circuit Board" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-31S2W8Y6L5I/UmSVvxEreoI/AAAAAAAAC1o/mGotXU3HXyY/DSC_0017_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Closeup on the Printed Circuit Board" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
The circuit is designed using EAGLE Cadsoft. Quite easy to learn in my opinion. Once you got the hang of it you will be able to design your circuit in no time. Youtube has some tutorials about EAGLE.<br />
<br />
This is after the etching process and tin plating process. I was one of the last batch so the tin solution is too diluted. Not a good plating, looks messy. Well, at least it works haha!<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-c1xsayGnNjM/UmSVwjIwukI/AAAAAAAAC10/ffWi8ejZxu0/s1600-h/DSC_0024%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Closeup on the Printed Circuit Board after tinning" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-DchERq8jdyY/UmSVxO5EohI/AAAAAAAAC14/G6F2RpAa33E/DSC_0024_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Closeup on the Printed Circuit Board after tinning" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
With all the components on it.<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fKUd-y_0NbI/UmSVxzYBP_I/AAAAAAAAC2E/uivKmjrmank/s1600-h/DSC_0028%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Final working PCB" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-v0WT3Kj2hqI/UmSVydG9TLI/AAAAAAAAC2M/rC6rsQRGlnw/DSC_0028_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Final working PCB" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
And it blinks!<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/--VJxWsPVB-o/UmSVzH2L4qI/AAAAAAAAC2U/mLtIxgrWj8Y/s1600-h/DSC_000015%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Final working PCB" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-WB5KEN8l1K4/UmSVz4pU2QI/AAAAAAAAC2c/xr5Am017gGA/DSC_000015_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="313" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Final working PCB" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
Not to forget, the souvenir keychain from this workshop. This is a PCB as well, manufactured by our lab. This is a complete circuit so if I solder all the components it might work! <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HCJz7RoA75g/UmSV0iTI4HI/AAAAAAAAC2k/mw7en8--HCU/s1600-h/DSC_0029%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IEEE USM Student Branch keychain" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-69UgYJao_6I/UmSV1F0_2JI/AAAAAAAAC2o/qN8n9MvZLbo/DSC_0029_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="416" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IEEE USM Student Branch keychain" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
That sums up what I did these three days. Quite packed but fun at the same time.Sometimes you just have to sacrifice something to gain something else. This is life, as we know it.<br />

Life is truly hectic here, with assignments, quizzes, and activities flying towards you, you’ll have to pick up some "manoeuvring” skill to avoid accidents with all those stuffs.<br />
<br />
To cut it short, I am now taking Electrical Engineering in <a href="http://www.usm.my/index.php/en/">Universiti Sains Malaysia</a>. One thing to note that I am now in the Engineering Campus, not the Main Campus. Feeling surprised? USM has 3 campuses, another one is Health Campus in Kelantan. <img alt="Winking smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-mnlCrfl433I/Uk2UXQIXRdI/AAAAAAAACvk/JpbSmciaFm4/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />

Below are some of the photos around USM, courtesy of my friend’s handphone. My HTC Wildfire S has a weak camera, unfortunately. <br />

USM Engineering Campus has no concrete drain. I was told that the drain is made to drain the water slowly into the bigger drain outside the campus to prevent flood. They say it is the most ‘romantic’ path in USM. Well, since I pass through here every single day, I would just prefer it to be short. <br />

And, my ‘art’ tonight. I joined an activity called “吹梅" ( chui mei) ( blowing out the plum blossoms, literally translated.). You drop some ink on the red paper and blow it around to make the branches, and then poster colour is used to make the flowers.<br />

Rifles</h3>
Used too much time on these two rifles. They are too complicated, couple that with the papers ( they just won’t stick to each other!) and time is wasted…<br />

In the fend, I found that waiting for the glue to dry up a little bit helps. Many extra parts are available for different pose. But I omitted the parts for legs. Too lazy to made those from metallised paper. By the way I changed the paper and re-printed.<br />
Left one is for the rifles, and right ones are fro the wings. Note the crumpled parts, guess what happened? <img alt="Winking smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-e1QqNUxaOzQ/Uisq8yQYN9I/AAAAAAAACus/CebK680SEKs/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />

For me, of course it’s the WINGS!<br />
<br />
Nothing can beat the beauty of wings, and in this case, the difficulty as well. <img alt="Thinking smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-thinkingsmile" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-bKVh0k7kdZU/UgytJ8UBnMI/AAAAAAAACXU/2SfKzeyF1Rg/wlEmoticon-thinkingsmile2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<br />
These are the first part of the smaller wings at the back.<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-GS7q78ScQcY/UgytL0hXXwI/AAAAAAAACXc/hrP_eotJxSU/s1600-h/DSC032143.jpg"><img alt="DSC03214" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-fPOszaLifgM/UgytNyuns5I/AAAAAAAACXk/lNPycp5BxKI/DSC03214_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_1" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-c1vNYL41FzM/UgytPasonmI/AAAAAAAACXs/j19X6RVy1ts/s1600-h/DSC032153.jpg"><img alt="DSC03215" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-wz7vE5fJTQk/UgytQ7AmQ2I/AAAAAAAACX0/N9uIRvqBY9Q/DSC03215_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_2" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
Finished first part.<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-QWCxL5qjRXk/UgytSw2VtKI/AAAAAAAACX8/u9B_abcpthM/s1600-h/DSC032163.jpg"><img alt="DSC03216" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-3aOInsflyTI/UgytUzNu0MI/AAAAAAAACYE/lkf-mRSs3ps/DSC03216_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_3" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
With other larger parts.<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zdcDzfcDmfI/UgytWmDEnjI/AAAAAAAACYM/yOi2qLiKk_U/s1600-h/DSC032373.jpg"><img alt="DSC03237" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-w5dxNCe2x4w/UgytYU1u8BI/AAAAAAAACYU/jNfaRGH9nVY/DSC03237_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_4" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
Finished ‘ smaller’ wing. Somehow, I love this photo very much. The lines actually enhance the shape of the wings. At first, I thought the lines are disturbing because the parts look very dirty with the lines on. Well, this shot proves me wrong. <img alt="Smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-lL7LduU4JxQ/UgytZD5RLWI/AAAAAAAACYc/gY3WwlXseZw/wlEmoticon-smile2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-YI_dy6u8yYc/Ugytbq_q2aI/AAAAAAAACYk/-xECTRacMqE/s1600-h/DSC03238-copy3.jpg"><img alt="DSC03238 copy" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-B4Nwx4_K3yk/UgytdSRt5EI/AAAAAAAACYs/xLgYnQPWd4U/DSC03238-copy_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_5" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
The much more complicated side wing. I call it the ‘large’ wing ,.<img alt="Smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-lL7LduU4JxQ/UgytZD5RLWI/AAAAAAAACYc/gY3WwlXseZw/wlEmoticon-smile2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TQ6yPYxr0dA/UgytfSdmONI/AAAAAAAACY0/DqapH1OdCKQ/s1600-h/DSC032393.jpg"><img alt="DSC03239" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kG6QI3pRORI/UgytgkL5QQI/AAAAAAAACY8/a_QycBWbsDI/DSC03239_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_6" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-tFz9YzCLld4/UgytiZKRNEI/AAAAAAAACZE/uD7gS2JHC04/s1600-h/DSC032403.jpg"><img alt="DSC03240" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-PZxLvuR3uxo/UgytkX5PNmI/AAAAAAAACZM/0p6-D8yzoEk/DSC03240_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_7" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
I divided the one big tab on the right side of the photo into three smaller tabs to make my gluing job easier and tidier.<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ikXm2DuccGQ/UgytlmYcpZI/AAAAAAAACZU/-rS6hBcYJcQ/s1600-h/DSC032423.jpg"><img alt="DSC03242" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-IzrRsCBJ63o/UgytmihJdPI/AAAAAAAACZc/jC7P5gX1qHQ/DSC03242_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_8" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
Side by side shot shows that they are actually of the same size. <br />
Well, I’ll just stick to my small and large wings, hahaha~<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2EOPEr17fm4/UgytoaJIsEI/AAAAAAAACZk/0q6jGyb9wvM/s1600-h/DSC032433.jpg"><img alt="DSC03243" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-IaH8oXNg_kw/UgytqGdSm_I/AAAAAAAACZs/6dfUrBWVhS0/DSC03243_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_9" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
And, with those wings on, Wing Zero will lean backwards. Cannot be help at all since the wings are like 50% of the width of the whole model. Not to forget, this is only left wings. Imagine the model with both side of wings… –facepalm-<br />
<br />
Plus, someone who built this model said that the ‘stand’ provided does not help at all. Since I had so much troubles trying to fit in all those pegs, I would not find it surprising……<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-I7Lo_hsOI-g/Ugytr_vcLoI/AAAAAAAACZ0/ptJLPotUs1k/s1600-h/DSC032443.jpg"><img alt="DSC03244" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-L-SwG63YJZc/Ugyts2UXYgI/AAAAAAAACZ8/ISciRevCdqQ/DSC03244_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Wings_10" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
However, I found a possible solution. Stay tuned for the little trick <img alt="Open-mouthed smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kVv9Ig6WSSY/UgyttsmhoZI/AAAAAAAACaE/FA3pYG_DH5U/wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<br />
Off I go to another pair of wings~ Whoosh~~~Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7390605879046063443.post-86179928913094485682013-08-15T19:34:00.000+08:002013-08-16T19:44:12.410+08:00SD Wing Zero Custom–Shoulders, Hands and BackpackSorry guys for the late update, got some real life issues needed to be deal with immediately. <img alt="Annoyed" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-annoyed" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-KNiOJ8sdBPs/Ugyr9EG_58I/AAAAAAAACS4/67Oitcxu1Sk/wlEmoticon-annoyed2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<br />
Alright, time for the photos!<br />
<h3>
Shoulders</h3>
Nothing special, a very straight forward build. I like the design very much though. I love the articulation shown in photos below.<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-bB1NxxbN7Xs/Ugyr-s3Y8cI/AAAAAAAACTA/jQhyGvSm5lI/s1600-h/DSC028498.jpg"><img alt="DSC02849" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-QpO-K9lgFH4/Ugyr_0K9BeI/AAAAAAAACTI/hY87AxD4GiM/DSC02849_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Shoulders_1" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
It can be rotated 360 degrees! While this is a basic requirement for most of the plastic model, it’s not the case for paper model. Since paper is more fragile and weak ( duh!<img alt="Surprised smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-surprisedsmile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-aaCb2fsyB4o/UgysAyfWpxI/AAAAAAAACTQ/eou2b47tuYc/wlEmoticon-surprisedsmile2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" />), they design the model to be in a fixed position to reduce the strain on the papers.<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-sEpGPDbVmdg/UgysCrNKXzI/AAAAAAAACTY/SuZTodZNKkI/s1600-h/DSC028506.jpg"><img alt="SD Wing Zero Custom _Hand_2" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-rX5pPQAK0BA/UgysD-14G5I/AAAAAAAACTg/LwTuBgnvC6I/DSC02850_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Shoulders_2" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
Still, have to improve my skill by a large margin. The finished part always ends up dirty and rigged.<br />

<h3>
Hands</h3>
This is such a short post LOL.<br />
<br />
Okay, still remember the misplaced part on leg? It’s supposed to be used here.<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-DNA3ML1KEyk/UgysL9Xi_VI/AAAAAAAACUI/4HS-kW7BsHY/s1600-h/DSC030003.jpg"><img alt="DSC03000" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-X0n97Z5Mseo/UgysM7kUVKI/AAAAAAAACUQ/D-Sek3xYOh8/DSC03000_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Hands_1" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
As the connector for the palm to the wrist!<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-sjgWmq7BQPs/UgysOylhWvI/AAAAAAAACUY/vBggo96vTpA/s1600-h/DSC030023.jpg"><img alt="DSC03002" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-qZk3Ptyxib0/UgysP80qwXI/AAAAAAAACUg/zX7eCxZchAY/DSC03002_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Hands_2" width="554" /></a><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
And the almost finished SD Wing Zero Custom!<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-lvTwt84_GQQ/UgysR3jPLlI/AAAAAAAACUo/8rzjnApE6DQ/s1600-h/DSC03014_13.jpg"><img alt="DSC03014_1" border="0" height="392" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-1BMaXGc5Gng/UgysTEho_NI/AAAAAAAACUw/DNM5JY8ukC0/DSC03014_1_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
<h3>
Backpack</h3>
Again, the silver paper causes some troubles. <img alt="Thumbs down" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-thumbsdown" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-OLzZ2L3MLtE/UgysT8j0ssI/AAAAAAAACU4/geBmZo90ljA/wlEmoticon-thumbsdown2.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /><br />
<br />
I cut off all the tabs to prevent misalignment. Still, the thickness of the paper cannot be fixed at all. <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-6Tz4OxxPDuI/UgysVyz0qqI/AAAAAAAACVA/1oICFWKfdSQ/s1600-h/DSC030569.jpg"><img alt="DSC03056" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-W9Duk-VHkl0/UgysXa9CnhI/AAAAAAAACVI/wjYfMJxd40c/DSC03056_thumb6.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Backpack_1" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
As shown, the left part is supposed to be inserted into the right part. For some reason, perhaps my paper is too thick, or the design is like this from the start, they have the same width! Which means my ‘plug’ cannot enter the ‘hole’ at all. ( Okay la, give it a push and it can be forced in, but push at your own risk, the paper could be damaged.)<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ynxFzAmXzJc/UgysZP_ZW2I/AAAAAAAACVQ/UqGHz3h0TcY/s1600-h/DSC030573.jpg"><img alt="DSC03057" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-sOg41p4LhBE/UgysaMAbd_I/AAAAAAAACVY/rjPMLlrvuUU/DSC03057_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Backpack_2" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
So, another strange idea flashed through. How about this? Huh….. Squeeze the part eh?<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Tf4us6FWlJ4/Ugysb94-axI/AAAAAAAACVg/FMl_kHt2YcA/s1600-h/DSC030583.jpg"><img alt="DSC03058" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-O1yucBqdDnA/UgysdDanm7I/AAAAAAAACVo/pToXMGqdFn0/DSC03058_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Backpack_3" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
And then it works! <br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jhrU2ltc6C8/UgysfeMRIcI/AAAAAAAACVw/uWrkOp5MIvc/s1600-h/DSC030593.jpg"><img alt="DSC03059" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-PtggQoHrqvk/UgysgrPbmAI/AAAAAAAACV4/U8SK0jj1xp4/DSC03059_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Backpack_4" width="554" /></a><br />
<br />
Again, dirty finished parts.<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-7rme_S4yyhI/UgysicohYII/AAAAAAAACWA/H7bd9ezOrs8/s1600-h/DSC030603.jpg"><img alt="DSC03060" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-vCcJoMUcrfA/UgysjnBiP7I/AAAAAAAACWI/xCEzb0XKv_Q/DSC03060_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="SD Wing Zero Custom _Backpack_5" width="554" /></a><br />

Sorry for the delay between the WIP posts for SD Wing Zero Custom. Such a nuisance when it comes to cutting the parts down. One piece has so many tabs. No wonder papercraft is so unpopular!</span><br />
<br />
Alright, let’s cut to the chase!<br />

Problems again. This centre piece, would not fit into its cap! </div>

Well, see my solution( a weak one though) below!</div>

SD Wing Zero Custom is the first Gundam papercraft I have ever tried. Although it’s an SD scale, its difficulty is never to be underestimated. While I estimated my required time to finish it was about 3 weeks, now, it has been over one month. Am I too slow? Perhaps ,hahaha~Hao Jiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12078079632053680650noreply@blogger.com3
